About the Company

Sameer Africa Limited, formerly under the name Firestone East Africa 1969 Ltd, was established in Kenya in 1969 as a joint venture between Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company of the USA and the Government of Kenya with the aim of producing tyres for the Kenyan and the East African market. The initial production capacity in 1971 was only 400 tyres per day. In 1985 Firestone Tyre & Rubber Company sold a significant part of their shareholding to Sameer Investments Limited, a Kenyan company. In 1988 when Bridgestone Corporation purchased Firestone Tyre & Rubber Company worldwide, Sameer Investments retained its shareholding in the local outfit. The company got listed in the Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1995, enabling other local investors to buy equity in the company.

The corporate identity changed to Sameer Africa Limited in April 2005 after a successful renegotiation of the technical and management contract with Bridgestone Corporation Japan. This change created an independent tyre producer based in Kenya and aiming to supply the East African and the COMESA markets. The current focus is on growing the export business to take advantage of the favourable tariffs within the region.

With this technical capability, we are able to produce a comprehensive range of tyres for our local conditions ranging from passenger car tyres, light and medium commercial vehicle tyres, truck and bus tyres, agricultural as well as off-the-road tyres, under our own brand name Yana.

Implementation of Environmental Programs

At Sameer Africa, we have an environmental management team, headed by an Environmental Management Representative (EMR). We have in place activities to maintain a monitoring program, maintain plant and equipment which protect the environment minimize waste, use proper waste segregation and handling procedures, educate and motivate our workforce, while at the same time expect similar environmental standards from the third parties we deal with. We have also established and maintained a definite reporting system for environmental non-conformances within our facility. We hold a major Management Review meeting annually, where we review all the Environmental programs.

In 2004, we adopted the Environmental Management System (EMS) Standard ISO 14001:1996(E), we were certified in the same year. In June 2006 we upgraded to the revised version of the same standard, ISO 14001:2004(E). We have since made considerable progress in environmental awareness within our facility and amongst our stakeholders. Sameer Africa is has also been certified on ISO 9001 for 6 years now. Currently we are in the process of implementing a new standard ISO/TS 16949, a Quality Management Systems Standard specific to the Automotive Industry. The need for the environmental standard implementation arose from concern by top management on social responsibility, management commitment to comply with changing environmental legislature, regulatory requirements and requirements by some of our Original Equipment Manufactures (OEM) customers.
